  • Sg Lembing Tour

Sungai Lembing is a tin mining town 42 km northwest of Kuantan in Pahang, Malaysia. Lembing is Malay for spear, and "sungai" means river. Per local legend, the local ruler saw a vision of a spear in the nearby river and thus named his town after this vision. Until the 1860s, Sungai Lembing was a major producer of underground tin. Sungai Lembing town developed in the 1880s when the British set up the tin mining industry, although the history of mining in this area extends much further back. From 1891, the Pahang Consolidated Company Limited, (PCCL), which was under British control, had a 120 -year lease to mine the area. • The Malayan Emergency Part 6/8

The Malayan Emergency was a the deadliest guerrilla war fought by the Commonwealth armed forces. The war with the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA), the military arm of the Malayan Communist Party, from 1948 to 1960 was an important part of Britain's colonial past. The Malayan Emergency was the colonial government's term for the conflict. The Communists termed it the Anti-British National Liberation War. The rubber plantations and tin mining industries had pushed for the use of the term "emergency" since their losses would not have been covered by Lloyd's insurers if it had been termed a "war." Despite the communists' defeat in 1960, communist leader Chin Peng renewed the insurgency in 1967; it would last until 1989, and became known as the Communist Insurgency War. Although Australi...

Der FilmMalaysia for me is ...“ thematisiert den „Boom“ der Anzahl afrikanischer Studierender in Malaysia. Vier Protagonisten aus vier verschiedenen Ländern Afrikas erzählen was sie nach Malaysia führte, was sie sich von dem Studium versprechen und vor welche Herausforderungen sie das Leben in einer anderen Kultur stellt. Der Film bietet einen Einblick in ihren Alltag und in ihre – positiven wie negativen - Erfahrungen mit Malaysia. Malaysia becomes an emerging supplier of higher education, aiming to turn into a global education hub with 10% of tertiary students coming from abroad by 2020. Having already established itself as a large supplier of higher education in South-East Asia and China, Malaysia has recently started to look out for new regions, which could serve as lucrative student providers. Africa with its rapid economic development, high population growth and the resulting increase of demand for quality higher education has become one of the new target regions for the Malaysian student recruitment. In 2014, the Malaysian immigration office issued more than 27,000 student visas for African nationals, which are 25,000 visas more than in 2006. The documentary „Malaysia for me is...” explores the recent “boom” in the number of African students in Malaysia. The filmmaker Melanie Gärtner and Alexandra Samokhvalova, a researcher in the project “Africa’s Asian Options” – AFRASO – at Goethe University Frankfurt accompany the four protagonists to get a glimpse into their daily lives. The four students, who come from different African countries (Namibia, Tanzania, Guinea and Chad), talk about their experiences of studying and living in multi-ethnic and multi-cultural Malaysia. Having different backgrounds, they offer diverse perspectives on the “phenomenon” of recent increase in the number of African students in the country. They also share their personal reasons – the so called “push & pull factors”, which helped them to decide in favor of Malaysia as their study destination. Kaiho and Jenny, students from Namibia and Tanzania, mention affordable tuition fees and relatively low living costs; while Youssouf from Chad stresses the importance of welcoming policies of the government and an international image of Malaysia as a forward-looking and peaceful Islamic nation as important reasons for him to choose Malaysia. The students also talk about their future plans and opportunities back home, which a Malaysian degree could bring. Besides, the film touches upon the issue of discrimination and negative image of African students in Malaysia, which the protagonists describe as one of the main challenges of staying in the country. Thus Moustafa, a student of Guinean origin, who has lived in Malaysia his whole life, explains how he fits into the local society and tries to play the role of a “stereotype breaker” in attempt to change the attitude towards Africans in the country. Despite stories about discrimination and other challenges of living in Malaysia, the students leave the impression of being satisfied with their living conditions and the quality of higher education. Moustafa even calls Malaysia his second home. Even though opinions about future growth of African students’ population in Malaysia differ among the protagonists, the film manages to show that Africans play a big role in the internationalization of higher education in Malaysia and will most likely continue to come in search for better chances in life at low cost. “Malaysia for me is…” is a documentary film by Melanie Gärtner, which was produced in cooperation with Alexandra Samokhvalova, a researcher at the Frankfurt Inter-Center-Programme on new Asian-African interactions AFRASO (Africa’s Asian Options). With the support of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), AFRASO carries out research on various topics of African-Asian interactions, including migration of African students to Malaysia.

REBELS OF THE FORGOTTEN WORLD offers the first ever insight into the West Papuan independence struggle against the Indonesian Army, which occupied the Western part of New Guinea in 1963. This is the most extreme and complicated film I ever produced. The preparations took me more than a year, I lost an airplane in the jungle of Irian Jaya, escaped the Indonesian Army for six month and got eventually rescued by helicopter. My survival depended on the Papuans, many amazing friends and also my parents back in Switzerland who helped coordinating the rescue operation. All the footage with the Papuans was shot by myself and the filming on the Indonesian side was organised by Alan Hayling. His input made it possible to illustrate 3 aspects of Indonesia's colonialism. First, the exploitation of copper and gold at Tembagapura is probably the main reason why the Indonesians invaded West Papua. The American run mining company, Freeport McMoRan is today one of Indonesia's biggest tax payers and is therefore financing Indonesian's colonialism in West Papua. Second, the Indonesian government created many transmigration camps all over West Papua where they settled over 1 million peasants from overpopulated Java. It helps alleviate population pressure but the Melanesian Papuans who are mainly Christians perceive these Malay and Islamic immigrants as foreign invaders. Third, the Indonesian government dismisses the West Papuan claim for sovereignty and the army crushes any opposition against their supremacy with an iron fist. They try to ban all media coverage and continue to commit genocidal atrocities against the indigenous Papuan population. http://www.vonplantaproductions.com/ Date: June 1990 Location: Indonesia, Irian-Jaya, West Papua Distributor: Channel 4 UK & world-wide distribution. Up until the mid twentieth century, the Tasaday as of 1971 could recall historical contact with two other local groups (known to the Tasaday as the Sandukasand the Tasafangs), apparently with similar lifeways to the Tasaday and also from the forest. Contact with the modern world (e.g. metal, cloth and cultivated foods) was not known to the 1970s Tasaday until the mid-20th century (exact date unknown, possibly the 1950s), when they met and began sporadically trading with Dafal, an itinerant member of various Philippine tribes including the Manobo Blit, Ubu and T'boli. (Note that these peoples, generally living outside the forest, were known to and at least somewhat familiar with the modern world at this time.) It is noteworthy, and helpful in comprehending the Tasaday's long-standing isolation, that many tribal peoples of Mindanao avoid the deep forest due to superstitions or beliefs. PCCL managed the mine from 1906 until its liquidation in 1986 when world tin prices collapsed...(Wikipedia)

Although Australian and British armed forces had fully withdrawn from Malaysia years earlier, the insurgency still failed.

From our research, a particular finding on South Korea women is that they find it reasonable and as a sign of friendship to walk, holding each others' hands in public. On the contrary, in North Korea, it is not common to see girls holding hands while walking; such conducts are associated with lesbianism in North Korea. Another general or common public practice, not taken as a taboo in South Korea is using cell phones , even when using public transportation like in buses and in trains. On the other hand, women in North Korea refrain from such conducts as they consider them as being inconsiderate. There are even posters in the public places that remind North Koreans not to use their cellphones in public areas. In South Korea, women and girls find it is a common practice to apply make-up in public while the North Korean women despise such conducts, as they are embarrassing when people stare at you. South Korean women prefer dealing with conflicts publicly as opposed to North Korean women, who try to avoid drawing attention, they despise negative judgments. Women in South Korea tend to expect men to pay their bills. They also believe that if their partner is not calling and messaging them frequently, they are cheating. North Korean women on the other hand, are independent and will even offer to pay bills on behalf of their men. 5th Ipoh International Waiters Race 2017 Ipoh's favorite hospitality event, the IPOH International Walters Race will celebrate its 5th anniversary at Kinta Riverfront on 14th May 2017. IPOH, a pioneer tin-mining town in the 1870s, became the meeting point of rivers, roads and railway, and the commercial centre of the Kinta Valley, the largest tin-producing region in the world. Ipoh was built by miners and migrants – Cantonese and Hakka mining towkays and their coolies, Malay aristocrats and small rubber-holders, Sumatran political refugees and journalist, European mining engineers and planters, Ceylonese pressman and printers, Sihalese jewellers, tamil railways-builders and Chettiar money-lenders, Japanese photographers, American Methodist missionaries, South Indian Muslim food-sellers and petty-traders, Hokkien shopkeepers, French Catholic and Eurasian educationists. By the early 20th century, Ipoh was a modern, well-planned town. Station Road was the financial and professional centre of Perak. Led by a progressive Kinta Sanitary Board, an active press, and sustained by an abundance of local pride, Ipoh sailed through periods of tin booms and busts. In the 1930s, Ipoh Art Deco represented an architecture of confidence, mirroring an affluent society of motorists and movie-goers. Those who made their wealth in the Kinta valley built grand mansions in the plush suburbs and sent their children to the best schools in Perak. The Japanese Occupation brought devastation, and changed the course of history. It was the Japanese who made Ipoh the capital of Perak. The Emergency was accompanied by a period of political awakening. In 1962, the Kinta Sanitary Board became the Municipality of Ipoh, and finally in 1988 the town of Ipoh became a City.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. It claimed eleven lives and is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010. The US Government estimated the total discharge at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3). After several failed efforts to contain the flow, the well was declared sealed on 19 September 2010. Some reports indicate the well site continues to leak.

Get your free audiobook or ebook: http://skyble.space/sabk/35/en/B01KIUGB4U/book "yes. He is the friend I have come to rescue" replied the hermit in a tone of quiet satisfaction. "he is a naturalist and lives with the Rajah against whom the pirates are plotting." "he don't look z'if he needs much rescuin'" remarked Moses with a chuckle, as they drew to land. The man looked in truth as if he were well able to take care of himself in most circumstances, being of colossal bulk although somewhat short of limb. "ah! mein frond! mine brodder!" he exclaimed, in fairly idiomatic English, but with a broken pronunciation that was a mixture of Dutch, American, and Malay. His language therefore, like himself, was nondescript. In fact he was an American-born Dutchman, who had been transported early in life to the Straits Settlements, had received most of his education in Hongkong, was an old school-fellow of Van der Kemp, became an enthusiastic naturalist, and, being possessed of independent means, spent most of his time in wandering about the various islands of the archipelago, making extensive collections of animal and vegetable specimens, which he distributed with liberal hand to whatever museums at home or abroad seemed most to need or desire them. Owing to his tastes and habits he had been dubbed Professor by his friends. "ach! Van der Kemp" he exclaimed, while his coal-black eyes glittered as they shook hands, "vat a booterfly I saw to-day! It beat all creation! The vay it flew oh! But, excuse me v'ere did you come from, and vy do you come? An who is your frond?"
